Wilborn Extreme trails |
|
This one is for atv's only, have been there several times,
Wilborn Extreme is a new, private “ATV Only” off-road park that opened in May of this year. The owner leases the 4,000 acres to Turkey hunters from October thru April, and then opens up the 75 miles of trails for ATV trail riding in the late spring and summer months. The owner is trying to capitalize on the off-season by allowing ATV trail riding on these beautiful trails the hunters have enjoyed exclusively for years. This new park is a great opportunity for people to ride a newly opened trail system in the hill country of Alabama. Who knows how long this ATV ride area will stay open.
The admission is $15 per quad per day. Seasonal passes can also be purchased. The park is only open on weekends and holidays. Contact: Dennis Wilborn at 1-800-337-3878 or 1-256-737-9595 (both are daytime numbers) for more information.
The park has plenty of parking, hook-ups for camping, a bike wash, concessions, and a “misting” system they constructed that you can ride your ATV underneath and cool off. They also provide you with a pretty decent “Home made” map. Helmets are “not” required, but are recommended. I strongly suggest you wear goggles if it hasn’t rained recently because of the dust. Sport ATV riders as well as 4x4 ATV riders will both have plenty of trails to
The trails are well graded and maintained. Since a lot of the trails are up and down the hillsides, I was surprised that the trails were not rutted up. The width of the trail ranges from quad width to about 20 feet wide. Some trails were so smooth your Grandma could ride double with you. Some were so step that you leaned as far as you could to keep from tipping over. A Rhino would be cool to drive there.
I enjoyed the power line trails that went on forever, as well as the tunnel under the Interstate 65. When you ride through the tunnel (4 tunnels - each approximately 10’ wide x 10’ tall by 400 yards long), there are more trails on the west side of the Interstate to ride.
The ATV trails cross several creeks, which are fairly shallow and easy to ride in. I really liked the creek riding, which was a welcome break from the dust on the trails. We rode 41 miles in six hours, which was a pretty good ride for us. We only rode the extreme western side of the park. I can’t wait to go back there and ride on more of the other trails.
Wilborn Extreme ATV Park is just 30 minutes from the great trails at Morris (exit 271) just above Birmingham, 45 minutes from Bankhead Forest ATV Trails (exit 312), 10 minutes from Chigger Ridge (exit 299), and 1-1/2 hours from Kentuck ORV Park near Talladega (I-20 west of Birmingham). The trails near Dodge City (exit 299) are twenty minutes away. Rent a motel in Cullman, Alabama and spend the week. The countryside is beautiful, and for those with a personal watercraft or boat, nearby Lake Lewis Smith has over 500 miles of shoreline and fantastic Bass fishing.
